Several states are moving to boost transportation funding as part of their upcoming budget cycles, citing rising construction costs and infrastructure needs.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation submitted a $282.8 million funding request on Jan. 5 for the next biennial budget, representing a $30 million increase over the current cycle. The proposal will be taken up when the state legislature convenes on Feb. 9 and has received the support of Gov. Mark Gordon (R).

Also on Jan. 5, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) proposed an additional $1.1 billion for road construction in his 2026 executive budget. The funding would be drawn largely from one-time surplus revenue in the state’s general fund. McMaster warned that without added investment inflation-driven increases in construction costs could lead to project delays. Lawmakers are set to consider the proposal when the legislature convenes on Tuesday to begin their 2026 legislative session.
