What happened: Georgia Department of Transportation is looking for 150 volunteers to participate in a federally funded pilot program to test mileage-based user fees on electric vehicles (EVs). The pilot, set to begin in late-2023, allows drivers to use GPS and non-GPS systems to track their mileage.

Why it matters: With the rise of hybrids and EVs, Georgia has seen revenues from its gas tax diminish in recent years. The agency is hoping to explore a pricing system that brings in similar revenues to what drivers of gas-powered vehicles pay in gas taxes each year. Electric vehicle advocates hope this will create an equitable system to collect revenue from fuel-efficient cars and trucks.

What’s next: Georgia’s pilot will last four months, followed by a preliminary analysis of the study with a final report expected in the second half of 2024.
