Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) endorsed a plan Dec. 17 to slightly increase the state gas tax by 1.5 cents-per-gallon and diesel fuel by 3.5 cents-per-gallon. The bill, pre-filed by Sen. Doug Libla (R-Poplar Bluff) Dec. 1, would avoid a state requirement that tax increases go before voters by limiting the amount the tax is raised.

Gov. Nixon told KCUR’s to Date host Steve Kraske, “It doesn’t solve the whole problem, but it’s clearly a step in the right direction. So I hope Sen. Libla’s bill gets out of the House, gets to the Senate and then gets to my desk.”

Several other bills have already been pre-filed in preparation for the start of the legislative session on Jan. 6, including a bill to increase the state gas tax by 7 cents-per-gallon.

Three measures were proposed in 2015 to raise needed transportation funding with motor fuel tax increases, all of which failed to advance.
