Lawmakers in 28 states introduced 99 measures to increase transportation revenue in the first three months of 2024, according to a March analysis by ARTBA’s Transportation Investment Advocacy Center.

Notable measures include:

New Jersey lawmakers approved legislation on March 28 to increase the state gas tax and phase-in a new $290 electric vehicle registration fee.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) on March 20 approved a new per-kilowatt hour public electric vehicle charging station fee, with revenue deposited in the state’s transportation fund.

Maryland bills to institute a new electric vehicle fee and adjust tolls advanced out of their first chambers. Gov. Wes Moore (D) has extended the regular legislative session to give lawmakers time to resolve differences between proposals.

– One-time transportation revenue legislation was approved in New Mexico and Washington state.
