What happened: The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) held a public meeting Dec. 7 where MoDOT officials presented a new $10 billion high-priority list to help identify transportation infrastructure needs and guide project development. The $10 billion list includes $4.7 billion in road and bridge projects.

Why it matters: According to a Nov. 2022 report, Missouri ranks 48th in the nation in transportation revenue per mile and has $1 billion in annual unfunded needs. In May 2021, the Missouri General Assembly passed Senate Bill 262 which incrementally raises the state motor fuel tax 12.5 cents per gallon over five years – from 17 cents to 29.5 cents per gallon by 2026. MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna noted that “even with additional revenue, transportation needs greatly outweigh funding available.”

What’s next: MoDOT plans to start matching available funds to projects in the high-priority list this coming spring.
