What happened: The Washington, D.C. City Council increased the annual vehicle registration fee to $500 from $175 for passenger vehicles over 6,000 pounds. The increase was included in the 2023 city budget, approved May 27.
Fees will also rise to $250 from $155 for vehicles over 5,000 pounds, and to $175 from $115 for vehicles between 3,500 and 5,000 pounds. The new registration costs are expected to generate $40 million over the first five years.
What’s next: The new fees will take effect October 2024.
