What happened: Voters in the Arizona city on May 17 approved Proposition 411, which extends the tax for 10 years and is projected to generate $740 million. 80 percent of remitted funds – $59 million annually – will go toward improving road conditions, while the remaining 20 percent – $15 million annually – will focus on safety improvements. 

The measure passed with over 73% approval.
