The Washington State Transportation Commission will propose a “by-the-mile” tax by Jan 13. to replace the state’s 49.4 cents-per-gallon gas tax over concern that increased fuel efficiency will dilute its effectiveness to raise sufficient revenue. Washington state Governor Jay Inslee (D) warns that reducing car tab fees will decrease transportation revenue by $4 billion and  stall dozens of highway projects. State Transportation Secretary Roger Millar insisted that no projects have been eliminated, just paused.  Read more>>

 

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) has proposed a 12 cents-per-gallon gas tax increase over the next three years. This plan would also index the gas tax to inflation, end state-mandated vehicle safety inspections, and cut vehicle registration fees in half. The state gas tax is currently indexed to the average wholesale price of fuel, but has remained at the minimum floor place since enactment in 2013. Read more>>

 

In Maine, a bipartisan Blue Ribbon Commission to study transportation funding solutions is considering raising the gas tax, enacting or increasing fees, and allocating other revenue to transportation.
