Recorded sessions of the 3rd Annual “National Workshop for State & Local Transportation Advocates” are now available for free on the Transportation Investment Advocacy Center™ (TIAC) website.

Speakers from 11 states – Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Arizona, California, South Dakota, North Carolina and Pennsylvania – discussed their experiences, both successful and unsuccessful, in running campaigns to protect or grow transportation funding. They covered topics including communication and outreach strategies, how to work with lawmakers in order to pass legislation, dispelling anti-gas tax rhetoric, and more.

Additional sessions included:

  • Dr. Alison Premo Black, chief economist at ARTBA, highlighted the latest research in transportation funding trends;
  • Dr. Stan Kaplowitz, professor of sociology at Michigan State University, discussed how policy characteristics and messaging can influence public support for raising the gas tax;
  • Jeff Loveng, CEO of SBL Strategies, shared advice on promoting transportation funding and revenue initiatives to conservative audiences and building preemptive communication strategies;
  • Robert Latham, executive vice president of the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, revealed how transportation advocates in the commonwealth took the next step after the state passed a major legislative funding victory.

Over 100 transportation investment champions from 30 states joined forces July 13 in the Nation’s Capital for the third annual National Workshop for State & Local Transportation Advocates. The need to broaden coalitions to gain further support and momentum was a recurring theme of the one-day event. The workshop featured better roads professionals, chamber of commerce executives and state legislators with an interest in building support for infrastructure investments locally, and included the annual meeting of the Transportation Investment Advocates Council™.
