Gasoline consumption from January through September 2016 grew 2.5 percent compared to the same period in 2015, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The report showed 12.2 billion gallons of gasoline and 1.8 billion gallons of special fuel, predominately diesel, were consumed during the period.

The Western U.S. reported the highest rate of growth at 3.1 percent, while the South Atlantic region saw the smallest growth with a 1.6 percent increase in gasoline sales.

The growth in gasoline consumption matches a recent FHWA report that showed a 3 percent growth in cumulative travel on all roads in the same January through September timeframe, compared to the same period in 2015.

Forty-four states provided data on their motor fuel sales, with the additional seven states estimated by FHWA.
